William R. “Mase” Mason, Jr., Denison class of 1957, is Mu Chapter's newest Constantine Sig, joining nine previous Mu Chapter recipients of the Order that recognizes brothers who, by their outstanding leadership, have brought honor and distinction to Sigma Chi.

Mu Chapter has an enviable reputation for attracting and cultivating great leaders and, in this selection of Bill Mason as Constantine Sig, the continuity of committed leadership continues.

In selecting Brother Mason, the Fraternity recognized his loyal and distinguished service to Mu Chapter that has extended over a period of more than 50 years. This service came into even sharper focus and attention during the past 8-10 years as Bill personally committed to assume leadership roles -- both with the active chapter and with the alumni foundation -- that have been vital and indispensable during a time that Mu Chapter faced enormous challenges with Denison, the general Fraternity, and the active chapter.

Although known best as “Mase” around Mu Chapter, Bill Mason earned another nickname in more recent times - “The General” - for becoming the daily overseer (practically speaking, the General Contractor) on what can be considered no less than a historic restoration of the 80-year old Sig House at Denison. Hardly a day went by that he was not on the scene, directing work crews, decorators, and running interference with the University to get the job done.

At the same time,  Mase intervened early in 2003 when misguided undergraduates’ behavior resulted in the loss of Mu’s charter but then became the spiritual leader to the young, colonizing group that drove a successful re-charter campaign a year later.

Then he became the de-facto Chapter Advisor following the untimely death in 2004 of long-time Chapter Advisor and Constantine Sig, John Tegtmeyer ’56. Serving in this capacity, Mase brought his clear-eyed leadership in providing essential liaison between the Mu Chapter, the Mu Alumni Foundation, and the Denison University Administration that resulted in a much improved relationship with the host school. Largely owing to his effective liaison with DU Administration, a breakthrough arrangement was struck with Denison whereby two floors of the Sig House were placed under a multi-year lease that significantly defrayed ongoing house expenses.

For many in the Denison and Granville communities, Mase is the personification of Mu Chapter and what it means to be a Sigma Chi. That he now is Mu Chapter of Sigma Chi's newest inductee into The Order of Constantine is a most fitting tribute to William R. Mason, Jr. '57.
