Richard E. Speidel '54

Dick Speidel, 75, of Chicago Ill., entered the Chapter Eternal September 6, 2008.  Editor-in-chief of the Cincinnati Law Review while earning his J.D. from the University of Cincinnati College of Law, he was a professor of law at the University of Virginia School of Law from 1961 to 1977, dean and professor of law at Boston University School of Law from 1977 to 1988, and the Beatrice Kuhn Professor of Law at Northwestern University School of Law from 1987 until his retirement in 2003.

He practiced law in Batavia, Ohio an was the well-loved owner of Duttenhofer's Books in Clifton, Ohio, from 1985 until into the early part of this century.  

Following retirement he had been a professor of law at the University of San Diego.  Known internationally as an expert in contract and commercial law, his most recent book, Arbitration Law in America: A Critical Assessment, was published by Cambridge University Press in January 2006. 

Dick served as a member of the Denison Board of Trustees from 1972 until 1991 when he was granted life trustee status.  He was a member of the Academic Affairs and Finance Committees, served as an Annual Fund volunteer, a capital campaign volunteer, a President's Associates volunteer, and as a peer rater.  He was awarded a Denison Alumni Citation in 1994.
