Leslie G. Karel, Sr. '47

KAREL SR., LESLIE G. Leslie Karel, 81, entered the Chapter Eternal April 19, 2005 in Deltona, Florida. A memorial service ws held at First United Methodist of Deltona. Also, at a later date, a military service was held at Ft. Custer National Cemetery in Battle Creek, Michigan.

Leslie was born August 15, 1923 in Grand Rapids, Michigan and served in the U.S. Marine Corps as a Corporal from 1942 to 1946. Most notably, he fought in the battle of Iwo Jima and participated in the occupation of Japan.

He attended Hope College and graduated from Denison in 1947.

Leslie is survived by companion, Adriane Rutgers of Holland, Michigan; sons, Les Karel, Jr., and wife Laney, Orlando, and Christopher Karel and wife Lisa of NY; daughters, Kimberly Karel, Orlando, who lovingly cared for her father for the past two years, Kelly Sarner of NY, Pam Savage of Alaska; grandchildren, Jake and Hannah Karel, Kirsten, Erin, Shannon and Josh Savage; sisters, Iris Allen, Patricia Drake and Janice Barr; brothers-in-law, Brian and Pat; Pamela Karel, ex- wife, loving friend and caregiver.
