Delvin "Del" G. Johnson '42

Del Johnson '42Delvin “Del” Geis Johnson entered the Chapter Eternal on August 27, 2013 in Youngstown, Ohio. He was 96.

The first son of William and Neva Johnson, Del was a great athlete in high school and served in the US Navy during World War II aboard the "USS LST 40." He graduated from Denison in 1942. Del was first of the three Johnson brothers to join Mu Chapter.

As a young man, Del worked for Wierton Steel, and then Wolverine Trucking Company delivering copper to Atlanta, Georgia. He then went on to become a teacher and coach at Toledo’s Whitmer High School. Del brought his love of wood and his great design and crafting talents to his students in shop and woodworking class, which was his passion. In addition, his strong values, passion for high standards, leadership qualities, and interest in young people made him an outstanding mentor for many students who remember him and his contributions to their lives.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife and life partner, Betty Kirkendall Johnson, and his brothers, Howard ’41 and Edward ‘44. Although Del and Betty did not have children of their own, they have always been wonderfully proud of their many nieces and nephews in New Jersey and Ohio, as well as their families. Over the past several years, Del's caregiver and friend, Bob Middleton, has demonstrated a pure compassion for taking care of Del and making him feel special.

All honor to his name.
