John was born and raised in the Cleveland area and graduated from Denison in 1949. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran, a Mason, and a long-time member of the Presbyterian Church in several locations, serving as a Deacon and Elder. He also took an active interest in volunteer work for church building and grounds.
