Burl Wesley Barker '47

Burl W. Barker entered the Chapter Eternal on April 1, 2012 at the Mayo Clinic Hospital in Phoenix, Arizona. Born in Bristol, West Virginia on June 17, 1922, Burl was 89 years old.

He attended schools in West Virginia and then, in 1942 in support of the war effort, Burl joined the Navy. Eventually he was assigned to the U.S. Navy V-12 unit at Denison and was initiated into Mu Chapter of Sigma Chi.

For nearly 40 years, until 1985 and while making his home in Elmore, Ohio, Burl was a Vocational Agriculture and Science teacher in Attica, Genoa, Harris-Elmore, and Gibsonburg school systems.

After retiring from teaching, Burl spent 26 winters in Arizona. He was an avid golfer, playing courses from Sugar Creek to Saint Andrews, and also enjoyed hunting and fishing. Burl and his wife, Phyllis, loved to travel; together, visiting all 50 states.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Phyllis Close Barker.

A celebration of Burl's life took place on June 17, 2012 in Elmore, Ohio.
